Retrospect for Macintosh Clients

Retrospect for Macintosh uses clients to provide fast, more secure, convenient, and complete backups of networked Macintosh, Windows, and Red Hat Linux computers. All three editions of Retrospect for Macintosh can be expanded with the purchase of client packs (licenses) that protect additional networked client computers. Client packs are installed on the computer that performs the backups and are available for 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 client computers.

Additionally, a client application must be installed on each client computer. Client applications are available from the Retrospect product CD or can be downloaded from the Updates page in the Support section. The following table lists the appropriate Retrospect client applications to use with different version of Retrospect when backing up client computers that run various operating systems.

Upgrading Clients

If you are upgrading to Retrospect 6.1 for Macintosh, you might also have to purchase an upgrade for your client packs and install new client applications on your client computers. If you have already purchased Annual Support and Maintenance for your client packs, your client upgrades are free.

Upgrading from Retrospect 5.0 for Macintosh

If you are upgrading from Retrospect 5.0 to Retrospect 6.1 and you currently have a client pack, you must upgrade the client pack and install new client applications for all your client computers. See the preceding table to identify the appropriate client applications.

Upgrading from Retrospect 5.1 for Macintosh

If you are upgrading from Retrospect 5.1 to Retrospect 6.1 and you currently have a client pack, you must upgrade the client pack only for your Mac OS X clients and you must install the Retrospect Client for Macintosh 6.0 client application only on your Mac OS X client computers. You do not need to purchase client pack upgrades or download new client applications for client computers that run Mac OS 7.1 through Mac OS 9, Windows, or Red Hat Linux operating systems.

Upgrading from Retrospect 6.0 for Macintosh

If you are upgrading from Retrospect 6.0 to Retrospect 6.1 and you currently have a client pack, you do not need to upgrade the client pack.

Client Upgrade Scenario

A Retrospect user upgrading from Retrospect 5.1 to Retrospect 6.1 currently has a client pack for 10 computers categorized by operating system:

  • Mac OS 9 - 2 computers
  • Mac OS X - 5 computers
  • Windows - 2 computers
  • Linux - 1 computer

Because only the five Mac OS X computers need to be upgraded, the user purchases a Client 5-Pack upgrade and installs the upgraded client pack on the computer that performs the backup. The user then downloads the appropriate client application (in this case, Retrospect Client for Macintosh 6.1 as listed in the preceding table) and installs it on the five Mac OS X client computers.
