Using the Backup Wizard

Selecting a Backup Source
Retrospect gives you a fine degree of control in selecting the data that you want to back up. Choose one of the options that let you protect the backup computer and the other computers on your network, or select Let me choose to specify individual folders and files.

File Selection Filters
To save space on the backup media, you can include or exclude specific kinds of files. Files types that are not selected will be excluded from the backup.

Scheduling Backups
Select a time for backups and schedule the days on which you want them to run.

Data Grooming
With scheduled backups, the hard drive eventually becomes full. You have the option of deciding whether Retrospect will prompt you to add more disk space or groom out older backups to make room for newer data.

The Backup Wizard displays a summary listing the backup source, the kinds of files selected for backup, and the backup destination.

Using the Restore Wizard

Selecting a Backup Set
To restore from a particular Backup Set, select the Backup Set. The Restore Wizard will display a list of available snapshots for the Backup Set. A snapshot is a list of files and folders existing on a computer during a particular backup. Select the snapshot that you want to use.

Choosing a Destination
Select a destination where you want to restore your restored files. Restore to the original location or select a new location for the data.

Volumes Database
The volumes database window allows you to view application databases that are available for backup.

Retrospect allows you to view the backup history for your application databases, including dates and times of backups and the types of backups that were performed.

Selectors allow you to back up or exclude files and folders based on multiple criteria, keeping your backups efficient by saving space on the backup media and minimize the amount of time need to complete backups.

Accurate Restores
With each backup, Retrospect creates a list of all data on the computer. Retrospect uses that list to restore only the precise files and folders necessary to return a computer to a particular point in time. Other software restores the initial full backup data and then overlays incremental or differential backups, which returns files and folders that were deleted, moved, or renamed between the initial and subsequent backups.

Comprehensive Reporting
Reporting capabilities provide an executive summary of all backup and restore operations. Reports can be exported automatically, either in raw or HTML format. E-mail notification contains information on both successful and failed backup events, including names of client computer and backup scripts that were run.

Disaster Recovery
The Disaster Recovery Wizard allows you to restore a computer to any prior point in time when a backup occurred. Retrospect gathers disaster recovery information as a part of the normal backup process and stores the information on the backup media. This information can be used to perform disaster recovery even for a computer that has failed completely.
